Puerto Vallarta Map
Puerto Vallarta Mexico covers more than 1,200 square kilometers, and has a population of more than 300,000 local residents. The city has modern conveniences and a modern infrastructure that has somehow managed to maintain its unique Old Mexico charm, unlike so many of the other more Americanized resorts.
Puerto Vallarta is in the Province of Jalisco. The province of Nayarit is north of Jalisco and also has many popular mexico holiday destinations, such as Sayulita and Punta de Mita. Be aware that there is a timezone between Jalisco and Nayarit (Jalisco is one hour ahead of Nayarit) so if you are staying in Nayarit and flying out of Puerto Vallarta airport, you will need to give yourself an extra hour.
Getting around in Puerto Vallarta is very easy by foot, and taxis are plentiful. Make sure to always agree on a price for your trip with the cab driver before you get in, otherwise your taxi ride could be more expensive. Bartering with cab drivers is part of the Puerto Vallarta experience.
If you are staying in a resort in Nuevo Vallarta, keep in mind that it is approximately 20-30 minutes cab ride to Puerto Vallarta city from there. Nuevo Vallarta is predominantly for tourists and many people staying in a resort there like to go to Puerto Vallarta for it's far superior night life and restaurant choices.
The airport in Puerto Vallarta is between Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta City. Taxi rides to Nuevo Vallarta should run you between 10-15$ US (or 100-150 pesos), while a ride into Puerto Vallarta city should cost between 8-10$US.
